Every Last Word
In the book, Every Last Word, by Tamara Ireland Stone, there were numerous characters that I could have easily chosen to be my favorite. However, Caroline Madsen's role in the novel stood out to me the most and here's why...Caroline becomes friends with Sam within the first week of school, coming back from summer break. Caroline has the traits of a shy outsider and is seen as a geek. She is the complete opposite of any of the popular kids. However, Sam is one of those popular girls in her junior class. But who would have known that Sam suffered from her OCD and is always doubting herself, drowning in her own dark thoughts. The only people Sam feels comfortable to talk to about her OCD is with Caroline and her psychiatrist. When Sam meets Caroline, it is like a breath of fresh air. Caroline has a great sense of humor, has no style, compared to Sam, and is very sarcastic. Caroline introduces this hidden room to Sam called Poet's Corner, a place to get away from school. Anyways, Sam feels more "normal" than she ever has been with her new friends in Poet's Corner. But, the crazy part of the whole book was discovering that Caroline was not even real. Caroline was a student there at the school, but has been dead for years, and somehow she helped Sam through her darkest thoughts and worries and made her feel "normal" for the first time ever. Her friendship with Caroline was going through her mind the entire time. But to be more specific, Caroline stood out to me the most because of her kindness, support, and guidance for Sam, especially since she wasn't actually present.

I loved reading your post! Your detailed descriptions of Caroline's attributes and specific characteristics allow me to get a truly accurate depiction of what an individual could be like in real life. Her ability to provide guidance and kindness would appeal to me as well, and I'd agree with you on the fact that she'd be one of my favorite characters too.
ReplyDeleteThat plot twist at the end had me reeling back! It's fascinating how Caroline, despite already being dead, helped Sam through her negative thoughts. The way you described her has peaked my interest and I may give this book a go to read it. If I do end up reading this novel, I'm pretty sure Caroline would be my favorite character too!
ReplyDeleteI honestly do recommend this book because unlike other novels I have read before, I got insight of how someone with OCD might feel in their daily lives! The plot twist came out of nowhere, but if you read the novel, by the end of the book, it actually makes a lot of sense! I'd say read this book because I could not stop reading it!
DeleteIt really shocked me that Caroline had not actually been there with Sam in real life. Although, I agree with how you said that even though she wasn’t there she made Sam feel as if she really had someone to enjoy time with. Your book seems like a very interesting choice, and this would be one I’m actually interested in reading!
ReplyDeleteIt is a pretty good book! The ending was very shocking to me as well, and I 10/10 recommend this novel!! I couldn't keep my hands off of it!
DeleteIt was surprising that a 'popular' girl would have trust in talking deeply to a 'geek'. It sounds like the opposite of today where most people have trouble talking to others deeply. Very interesting and great job on explaining the character.
