Whenever we start something new, we always try to have a goal in mind, to achieve something so that we can have that feeling of satisfaction to be able to know that we are important. I, myself, feel that I always make goals upon goals upon goals to try and accomplish things that are hard. For example, one of my many goals is that I actually use Mrs. Garvin's reading chart, instead of just reading it all the day before the test, so that I can retain the information better. The thing is though, is that I always do the exact opposite of the thing I always say I will do. Instead of following the chart, I just read it the day before the test, like I told myself not to. Even though we make goals to motivate us to do something hard, it is not the goals that need to be the motivators, it is ourselves.
When we make goals it is because we see the perfect us from our dreams, the perfect student, athlete, "band kid", and want ourselves to be like that, which results in us making a goal to be like that impossible image. When we do this we expect ourselves to be motivated to do our goal, to make ourselves better just because we put our mind to making a goal, not because we put our mind to doing what our goal suggests. Not that goals aren't important to make, they are, the just need to be made and put our efforts to attaining it.
One of the goals I have this year is that I wish to stay on task. This is a real problem for me because I am like a dog that keeps seeing a squirrel and running after it, but forgetting that I am supposed to fetch the ball. I paused every other sentence writing this very paragraph, and all of the previous ones. To me, my most important goal is to study. Not study all of my classes, just exclusively AP World (Because I am fairly confident that I can look over the content the day before a test and know it, or not look at it at all). For AP World, if I, as previously stated, use the reading chart and write down my IDs, then I can review the IDs which will trigger my memory and help me remember. And also if I study for AP World then I also accomplish my other major goal of not getting distracted, so it is a win-win for me.
(Sorry if I sounded long-winded and if it didn't flow well)
Thanks for reading to the end.
